With such a vast stretch of coastline, it’s no surprise that Rhode Island has some of the most beautiful beaches in America. And many people to choose from, you will definitely not be disappointed. For a fun day out, head to Misquamicut State Beach and enjoy the sand with a drink in hand at Paddy’s Beach Club or Windjammer Surf Bar. Then finish the night at the park on site or see a movie at the drive-in. For a trip off the beaten path, visit Goosewing Beach in Little Compton for a cool summer picnic.
2. It has a beautiful walking path.
You don’t have to sit on the beach all day to enjoy the best the Ocean State has to offer. If you like to be on a walk, enjoy the beautiful sea view along the beautiful promenade. Take a leisurely stroll along the Cliff Walk for beautiful coastal views and castles in Newport, or visit Narragansett Bay and Beavertail State Park in Jamestown. And if you really want to challenge yourself, go down the 141 steps at Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island. Downstairs, you’ll find one of the most hidden and sought-after beaches in all of New England.
3. There is a noisy city atmosphere.
Rhode Island is so much more than just sand and surf—it has a bustling urban scene in Providence, too. If you’re a city girl, stay in the heart of downtown the Omni or Providence graduate and spent the day self-guided tour to learn about the history of the country. Or check out RISD’s beautiful exhibition at America’s Greatest Mall, The Arcade Providence. In the evening, dine at a restaurant on Federal Hill before heading to the Rooftop at Providence G, where you can enjoy an after-dinner drink with a skyline view.
4. It has a great history.
It only makes sense that one of the oldest states is steeped in such a rich history, literally and figuratively. Newport Houses, built during the Gilded Age of America, are some of the symbols of this history. Home to new wealthy families like the Vanderbilts, they represent the power of this inclusive era. Immerse yourself in the beauty by visiting these amazing places. Afterwards, take a stroll along Ocean Drive to see the beautiful buildings before stopping for dinner at the Castle Hill Inn for fine dining and sparkling ocean views.
5. Sweet food.
I travel all around the US, and I can confidently say that New York City is the only place that can compete with my home cooking. Little Rhody has some of the best restaurants in the country (confirmed by Viola Davis in her memoir, Finding me). No matter where you go, fresh-from-the-sea seafood is unlike anything you’ve ever had. Have a great Italian meal at Pane e Vino in Providence or head down to Iggy’s in Warwick for some famous clam cakes, chowder and doughboys.
6. It has a nice, small town vibe.
Because the summer months can be busy, many of us need to recharge more during this time. And despite being the second most populous state, Rhode Island is the best place to do that. Its charming, small-town vibe will make you feel like you’ve been immersed in the setting Gilmore Girls. Stroll the European-inspired streets of Wickford Village while sipping Del’s Lemonade, or head down the Galilee and see the village back. If you really want to get out, take the Block Island Boat for a day trip to a hidden island.
